It's not the cheap pack that's the issue; the problem is the cheap pack which has no fit list, no part number, and no warranty. If you check the four points listed below, then a replacement battery is no gamble; it's only a gamble if you don't.
What the two options cost
| Option | Typical price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Factory pack from the manufacturer | Close to $100, at the time of writing | The brand name and the dealer network |
| Model-matched replacement | $69.99 in this collection | Part-number matched packs, charge-tested before shipping, 1-year warranty |
Since prices are subject to change, regard the factory price as only an approximation; there has been this kind of gap between the two options for years, and that is precisely the reason why a replacement market exists.
The four checks before you buy
1. The part number matches
The number on your old battery's label, the one that starts with ABL- or 4INR, identifies the plug and the cells. A listing that tells you which part numbers it replaces is a listing where someone checked. A listing that skips it is a listing where you're the one checking, after it arrives.
This number is your match key. No number on the listing, no sale.2. The capacity is right for you
Ah and Wh are merely a matter of tank capacity; as long as the plug is the same, a larger tank will fit the same robot and will just last for a longer time. The robot only draws the amount of current that it needs, so there is no danger in choosing a larger capacity. The choice comes down to price compared to runtime, and that's all. For the longer version of that argument, the label explainer has it.
3. The pack has a protection board
All respectable packs come with a small circuit board in them, the BMS, which prevents overcharging, over-discharging and short circuits. That's what makes the difference between a battery and a fire hazard. If the listing doesn't mention any protection, you should ask before making your purchase.
4. The warranty is real
Twelve months is the minimum you should accept, and read what it actually covers. A warranty that excludes everything except a factory fault you can't prove is not a warranty. The warranty is the part people skip reading, and it's the part that matters most when a pack fades in month ten.
Red flags that end the conversation
- No fit list, just "compatible with most Roomba models". No pack fits most models. That sentence means no one checked.
- No part number anywhere in the listing.
- No warranty terms, or terms you have to dig for.
- A price so low the numbers don't work. If a pack costs less than the cells inside it should cost, something got cut somewhere.
I would rather buy a pack with an honest fit list of four models than one claiming to fit everything. The short list means someone checked.
Which pack for which robot
| Your robot | Get this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| i7, j7, i4, e5, e6 (vacuum-only) | ABL-D1 pack | The standard match |
| i7, i3, i4, i8, e5, e6 | ABL-F 4460mAh pack | High capacity, longer runs |
| Combo j5+, j7+, j8+, j9+ | ABL-D2 pack | The Combo plug |
| s9, s9+ | ABL-B pack | The only pack that fits |
| 600, 700, 800, 900 series | 4376392 pack | The long-list classic |
| Braava jet m6 | ABL-C pack | The robot mop pack |
All of them sit in the Roomba battery collection, sorted by series with the fit lists right there on the page. For the full series-by-series map with the part numbers to look for, the compatibility guide has it all on one page.
Warranty and returns, the honest version
Here is how it works here. Every pack we sell is charge-tested before it ships, and if it quits within a year, we replace it. No shipping games, no fine print. Send the order number, we sort the rest. Price is the last thing I check, not the first. A ten-dollar saving is expensive when the pack dies in six months.
